A charismatic and versatile performer,
Andrew McCarthy is well-known to film, theater and television
audiences for his unique and memorable roles.
He appeared recently in the ABC television drama Kingdom
Hospital. The limited series was written by renowned,
award winning author Stephen King. Currently shooting the
thriller, “The Crusader”, McCarthy has also just
made his writing and directorial debut in his screen adaptation
of a Frank O’Connor short story News
for the Church.
At seventeen McCarthy enrolled in the theatre
program at New York University. He left after two years and
soon won the lead role in his first feature film, Class,
opposite Jacquelyn Bisset. McCarthy quickly went on to star
in a succession of box office hits including St. Elmo's
Fire, Pretty
In Pink, Mannequin, Less Than Zero and
the cult favorite – Weekend
at Bernie's.
French auteur, Claude Chabrol then tapped
McCarthy to play the lead in his film Quiet
Days in Clichey, and also featured him in Dr.
M. McCarthy then worked with John Frankenheimer in Year
of the Gun on location in Rome, as well as working for
the BBC in England.
Returning to the United States in the 1990s,
McCarthy was praised for his character work in such films as The
Joy Luck Club, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious
Circle and Mulholland Falls. He also starred
in independent hits such as Bruce Wagner’s adaptation
of his novel, I’m Losing You and New Waterford
Girl. He recently completed work on two additional motion
pictures, The Orphan King and 2B Perfectly Honest,
set for release in 2004.
McCarthy made his Broadway debut in 1985
in the Vietnam drama The Boys of Winter. The last
five years have seen him star in no less than nine plays including
the Tony award-winning Sideman on
Broadway, the off-Broadway hit, The Exonerated, the
one-man show A Distant Country Called Youth at Williamstown
as well as acclaimed productions of Long
Days Journey Into Night and The
Glass Menagerie. He is a member of the Ensemble Studio
Theatre and the Actor’s Studio.
Throughout his diverse and impressive twenty
year career, McCarthy has also made special appearances on
television. As far back as 1986 when he starred in Steven Spielberg’s Amazing
Stories, McCarthy has chosen projects that have resonated
with him both personally and professionally. These selections
include Hallmark’s recent hit Straight
From the Heart and The
Christmas Tree for ABC, which marked the directorial
debut of Sally Field.
McCarthy also travels extensively. He has
walked across Spain, gone down the Amazon River, traversed
through much of Africa and Southeast Asia. An avid kayaker,
he has paddled in Artic Norway, Alaska, the Pacific and his
home waters of the Hudson River off Manhattan.
He resides in New York City with his wife
and son. |
